Objectives:
The International Day for Disaster Reduction is annually observed for the following purposes:
- to foster better understanding and knowledge of the causes of disasters and the increasing challenges facing the disaster response and preparedness capacity,
- to promote a global culture of disaster risk reduction, including the reduction of vulnerability to natural disasters,
- to help strengthen capacities to cope with disaster risks and build resilience to natural disasters.
Inception:
International Day for Disaster Reduction was observed for the first time in 1990.
History:
On 22 December 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/44/236), designating the second Wednesday of October as the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction to promote a global culture of disaster risk reduction.
On 21 December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly decided to change the name to International Day for Disaster Reduction and designate October 13 as the official date for this day, by Resolution A/RES/64/200.
