History:
In 2011, the International Day of Charity was conceived in Hungary as a civil society initiative to enhance visibility, organize special events, and increase solidarity, social responsibility, and public support for charity.
On 17 December 2012, in response to a proposal by the Hungarian Government and the efforts of charitable organizations and individuals, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/67/105) designating 5 September as the International Day of Charity.
The date of September 5th was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (born in 1910 and died on September 5th, 1997), a renowned nun and missionary who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa devoted herself to helping people in need for over 45 years.
