The International Day of Hope was first commemorated at United Nations Headquarters on July 12, 2025, marking the beginning of an annual tradition dedicated to inspiring optimism and positive change worldwide.
History:
On March 4, 2025, the United Nations General Assembly officially established July 12 as the International Day of Hope, to be celebrated annually, through resolution A/RES/79/270. This special day serves to recognize and promote hope as a fundamental principle guiding individuals, communities, and nations worldwide.
The resolution is rooted in the timeless values of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which champion peace, dignity, tolerance, and collective progress. It encourages initiatives that regularly unite the international community to advance well-being, with the aim of strengthening hope and fostering peace, tolerance, social stability, respect for diversity, and mutual respect. By mobilizing efforts globally—as well as at regional, national, and local levels—the resolution seeks to cultivate an environment where well-being, peace, and mutual understanding can flourish.
