Objectives:
The International Day of Peaceful Coexistence is observed annually with the following objectives:
- To recognize that peace not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved through mutual understanding and cooperation.
- To promote a culture of peace and non‑violence that benefits all of humanity, particularly future generations.
- To foster peaceful and inclusive societies in support of sustainable development, ensure access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
- To emphasize the importance of raising awareness about different cultures, values, attitudes, attitudes, behaviors, lifestyles, religions or beliefs, and of education in promoting tolerance and eliminating all forms of discrimination.
Inception:
The International Day of Peaceful Coexistence will be celebrated for the first time on 28 January 2026.
History:
On 4 March 2025, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/79/269, proclaiming 28 January as the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence, to be observed annually. The resolution emphasizes the responsibility of Member States and stakeholders in advancing tolerance, respect for religious and cultural diversity, and human rights. It also invites all countries, international organizations, civil society, and the media to commemorate the International Day through meaningful activities that cultivate a culture of peace, inclusion, understanding, and solidarity.
