Date: Monday, 22 May 2023; 31st Anniversary.
Sponsor: United Nations
Coordinator: Convention on Biological Diversity
Objective:
The purpose of International Day for Biological Diversity is to increase understanding and awareness of global biodiversity issues.
History:
It was first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993.
From 1993 until 2000, International Day for Biological Diversity was held on December 29 to celebrate the day the Convention on Biological Diversity went into effect.
On 20 December 2000, the UN General Assembly designated 22 May of each year as International Day for Biological Diversity to commemorate the adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity on 22 May 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit.
The date was changed to avoid the many other holidays that occur in late December. It was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December.
How to celebrate the Day
Learn, share, and actions!
Since 1993, many organizations and communities host annually a range of educational and promotional events on May 22, including seminars, lectures, conferences, forums, and social media campaigns, to raise and spread awareness of biodiversity-related issues and promote innovative actions to avoid biodiversity loss.
