Over 37.2 Million Hectares Scorched By Wildfires Around the World in 2019

Wildfires may be noted at any land around the world. With climate change, however, the number and intensity of wildfires have been increasing since 2000. 2019 is one of the years with many alarming wildfires burning over the world. The “most alarming” wildfires in 2019 are the Amazon Wildfires and Australia Bushfires, causing unprecedented damage.

In the era of global warming, massive wildfires are no longer local issues with risk to living environment and safety. They are also global issues that contribute to climate change. Thus, it is important for us to be aware of the scale and intensity of massive wildfires over the world in order to work out strategies to prevent and manage them.

Overall, wildfires have scorched more than 37.2 million hectares (372,000 km2) of woodland and grassland around the world since the beginning of 2019.  Here is a quick look at where some major fires was burning around the world and the areas burned in 2019.

1. Australia Wildfires

Total fires: over 5,900

Burned area: Around 16.8 million hectares (42 million acres, 168,000 km2)

Fatalities: 28 deaths

2. Amazon Wildfires

Total fires: More than 224,000

Burned area: 12 million hectares (120,000 km2; 46,000 sq mi)

Fatalities: At least 2

3. Siberia Wildfires

Total fires: Nor reported

Burned area: More than 5.5 million hectares (13.5 million acres; 50,000 km2)

Fatalities: Unknown

4. Greenland Wildfires

Total fires: Over 100

Burned area: Over 93,000 acres (375 square kilometres)

Fatalities: None

5. Alaska Wildfires

Total fires: 663

Burned area: Over 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres)

Fatalities: None

6. Canada Wildfires

Total fires: 3,873

Burned areas: More than 1.8 million hectares

Fatalities: None

7. California Wildfires

Total fires:  7,860

Burned area: 105,140 hectares (259,800 acres; 1050 km2)

Fatalities & Injuries: 5 deaths; 22 injured

8. Indonesia Wildfires

Total fires: 5,086

Burned area: More than 800,000 acres

Fatalities: Unknown

9. Spain Wildfires

Total fires: To be confirmed

Burned areas: 57,000 hectares (140, 000 acres)

 Fatalities: None

10. United Kingdom Wildfires

Total fires: 96

Burned areas: Over 16,000 hectares (39,500 acres).

Fatalities: None

11. Greece Wildfires

Total fires: To be confirmed

Burned areas: More than 28,000 hectares (69,100 acres)

Fatalities: None

12. India Wildfires

Total fires: To be confirmed

Burned areas: At least 10,920 acres (4,420 hectares)

Fatalities: Unknown

13. Wildfires in Sub-Saharan Africa

Total fires: More than 9000

Burned area: unknown

Fatalities: unknown
