Objectives:
World Cities Day is annually celebrated for the following three purposes:
- To raise and spread awareness of the role of urbanization in global sustainable development and social inclusion.
- To promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization.
- To enhance cooperation among countries and cities in meeting opportunities, addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.
Inception:
The first World Cities Day was held on October 31, 2014.
History:
On December 27, 2013, The UN General Assembly designated the 31st of October as World Cities Day, by Resolution A/RES/68/239, to emphasize the world’s urban challenges and engage the international community towards the New Urban Agenda.
How to celebrate the Day:
Since 2014, World Cities Day has annually honored and celebrated over the world in a range of ways including seminars, lectures, conferences, educational programs, and social media campaigns. Each year a particular theme is selected, by the United Nations, to either promote the successes of urbanization or address specific challenges resulting from urbanization.
